Learn about your favorite cities with maps!  At DaVinci Business Graphics, we provide educational and decorative maps to help people learn more about the countries, states, and cities that interest them.  Today, we begin our City Spotlight series by taking a look at Baltimore, Maryland: a City of Firsts.

Baltimore may have the most titles of “First City to…” than any other city in the nation.  Dating back to its founding back in 1706, Baltimore has tried to be the first city to do almost everything.  Let’s start from the top.

In 1743, Baltimore became the first city to have a professional sports organization.  It was the Maryland Jockey Club, and it was the beginning of the states long-standing fascination with horse racing.

In the field of aviation, Baltimore was the first American city to launch a manned hot air balloon.  In 1784, Edward Warren became the first American to be lifted in a hot air balloon—and he was only 13 at the time.

Edgar Allen Poe is one of the city’s favorite authors and in 1949 Baltimore became the first city to erect a statue in the likeness of the famous writer.  Every year, on Poe’s birthday, a mysterious stranger dressed in black leaves a bottle of cognac and 3 red roses on Poe’s grave (Poe was married and died in Baltimore).

Baltimore is also the hometown of the first African-American judge to serve on the Supreme Court: Thurgood Marshall.  In Baltimore, the list of fists goes on and on and on…
