Before you can move forward and set effective, reachable goals for your business, do yourself a favor and take a look back.  Doing a quick audit of your prior year can help you set useful goals for the following year.  Identify which experiences you enjoyed and which you’d like never to repeat again.

Set goals that excite you.  If you’ve been struggling to achieve the same goal year after year after year, it could be because the goal isn’t exciting enough.  Don’t feel like every step in attaining your goal should leave you tingling with excitement, but consider this: if you can’t get excited about your business, why should anyone else?

Make it specific, but make it attainable.  Many business owners set vague objectives such as “be more organized, be more successful, be happier.”  With such vague goals, where do you even begin?  Make your goals specific, but remember to keep them within reach of you and your team.  Focus on the things that are within your control.

Create milestones and a plan.  A goal is great to have, but you need to know how to get there.  Create a roadmap to achieving your goals, making sure to mark little stops, or milestones, along the way.  Taking small steps within your goal will instill confidence in your team and make the overall goal seem more attainable.
