Near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers sits the city of Portland, Oregon.  With a population of just over 580,000, you would never guess that Portland would have a distinct, small town feel.  But that small town feel and sense of community are what have inspired Portlanders to make their city one of the most environmentally sustainable cities in the US.

The Largest (and Smallest) Parks in the US

Portland has consistently been voted the “Greenest City in America.”  With such a large population, how has Portland achieved this feat?  If you ask any Portlander, they’ll say it’s mainly due to the sense of responsibility that the residents share.  Portlanders passed a measure back in 1995 to create more green spaces.  Today, more than 8,100 acres of ecologically valuable natural areas have been purchased and permanently protected from development.  Forest Park is the largest wilderness park within city limits in the United States, covering more than 5,000 acres.  Portland is also home to the US’s smallest park: Mill Ends Park, which is just 24 inches long.

A Sustainable Culture

In Portland, cycling is a big deal.  8% of commuters bike to work (the largest percentage of any city in the US).  Portland ranks highly among the most bicycle-friendly cities in the country.  If cycling isn’t your thing, hop onto Portland’s expansive mass-transit system.  If you thought bicycles and public transportation were the only things that gave Portland its green reputation, think again.  Half of the city’s power comes from renewable sources and Portland’s DIY culture is passionate about recycling and reusing anything they can get their hands on.
