Many rumors surround the origins of Seattle’s nickname, the EmeraldCity, although the agreed-upon origin comes from a 1982 tourism contest.  Seattleites voted for the EmeraldCity as their choice nickname.  The name was submitted by a Californian who was thoroughly impressed by Seattle’s lush forests and parks.  Other former nicknames for Seattle included “The Gateway to Alaska.”

4,000 Years Of History

A long time before the 1982 nickname contest, Seattle was home to Native Americans.  The first tribe discovered in Seattle, referred to as the Duwamish tribe, lived in the area for over 4,000 years.  Eventually, White settlers came to the city and transformed it into a logging town in the mid-1800’s.  In a short time, Seattle became a major transportation center.  It was the main site of shipbuilding in the early 20th century and in the 2000’s, it became the home to several large technology firms.

America’s Fittest City

Seattle’s mild, temperate marine climate allows year-round outdoor recreation, including walking, cycling, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, rock climbing, motor boating, sailing, team sports, and swimming.  The city’s many lush parks and green forests are popular attractions, including DiscoveryPark, the city’s largest park.  All the physical activity and open spaces have certainly paid off for Seattleites: in 2005, Men’s Health voted Seattle the fittest city in America.
