Let’s be honest: New York City has a lot going for it.  It has some of the best food, historical sights, and diverse, cultural neighborhoods.  But in this article, we are going to focus on the art destinations.

In New York City, you’ll find some of the most famous works of art; works that you’ve seen in movies and read about in books all your life.  At the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or The Met) you’ll find seventeen curatorial departments dedicated to Asian art, Oceanic art, Egyptian art, Byzantine art, and much more.  You’ll find ancient Egyptian artifacts as well as artwork such as Washington Crossing the Delaware.

Try the Museum of Modern Art if you want to see paintings by masters like Van Gogh, and Picasso.  You can find Van Gogh’s Starry Night here, a painting you’ve no doubt seen many times before.

The Guggenheim is another can’t-miss attraction for art lovers.  Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1940’s, the Guggenheim Museum is one of the most important architectural landmarks in the city.  It houses paintings by Impressionists, Modernists, and contemporary artists.  Composer Philip Glass held a series of performances in the building in the 1980’s.

It’s impossible to see all that these museums have to offer in a day (or even a weekend).  Many New York art museums offer free or pay-what-you-wish admission, giving art lovers from all walks of life a chance to experience some of the great works of our time.  Whether you’re visiting Chelsea, Madison Avenue, or Brooklyn, there is a great museum to see and a revolutionary work of art to experience.
