How well retailers and online stores do over the Thanksgiving weekend is often a good indication of how the rest of the holiday season will unfold.  Poor Thanksgiving weekend sales usually translate to poor Christmas sales, and vice versa.

Overall, 2012 was a good year for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and all the other “retail holidays” that occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend.  Cyber Monday sales reached $1.47 billion dollars, up 17% from last year.  This indicates a heavier reliance on online sales during the holiday season for many consumers.

Black Friday wasn’t too bad either.  Black Friday sales reached $1.04 billion, besting last year’s sales numbers by 28%.  Online spending for the entire month of November reached $20.4 billion, a 15-percent increase over the corresponding period last year according to comScore research.

A lot of companies came out on top this November.  Ford saw an overall increase in sales of about 52% and Amazon.com received over 35 million visits on Cyber Monday.  Businesses that offer free shipping saw higher sales numbers than those businesses that charge for shipping services.

What does this mean for the rest of the holiday season?  While experts are excited to see such high retail and online sales, others are skeptical.  Some researchers believe people spent their entire holiday budgets during the Thanksgiving weekend, meaning December sales won’t be anything special.  Most businesses will just have to wait and see.
